Inform the secretary that you have an interview scheduled for this time with (name of interviewer)

Greet the interviewer by name and inform him/her of your name. Always let the interviewer take the initiative in shaking hands. If the interviewer does present his/her hand, return with a firm but not crushing grip. Do not be seated until invited to do so by the interviewer.

Be aware of your body language. Sit comfortably and straight. Do not attempt to read material on the desk unless invited to do so. Keep your hands, arms and feet away from the desk.

Eye contact is one of the most powerful forms of communicating. It demonstrates confidence, trust and power.

Speak in a normal tone of voice, making certain to enunciate clearly. Avoid using slang expressions when conversing with the interviewer.

Generally, the interviewer will take the initiative by asking a leading question. Answer thought fully and then direct the conversation back to the interviewer, perhaps by asking a related question or his/her opinion on a phase of the subject being discussed. Do not give short answers. Give complete answers.

Communicate your skills, qualifications, and credentials to the interviewer. Describe how you will contribute to the organization. For example, improve sales, reduce costs, improve productivity and solve organizational problems.

Do not question the interviewer concerning salary unless the subject is brought to your attention by him/her. See the interviewer’s assistant for this information after the employer has ended the interview. Give the interviewer the impression that you are interested in the position she/he has to offer rather than the benefits you will receive upon accepting it.

When the interviewer has ended the interview, stand back and than k the interviewer for his/her time.

You are responsible to report immediately if you are unable to keep a scheduled interview time. Do not wait until it is time for the interview to call, this should be done at least 24 hours in advance. Try to reschedule for a more convenient time for the employer.

Dress appropriately for the interview. Ladies’ skirts and dresses should be knee length and tops should not expose cleavage. Also, shoes should be a low heel coordinating with the dress or skirt. Earrings should not be long or dangle and you should be cautious of your hairstyling. Hair color should not clash with the job you are applying for. Gentlemen should wear neutral colored slacks with a solid colored shirt and tie. Your hair should be neatly trimmed and no earrings should be worn.
